Many families and individuals who inhabit these slums came to Lagos from other regions of Nigeria with the hope of escaping the rural poverty, deprivation and political instability of their home states. The demolitions, believed to have been on the orders of the Lagos state government, were part of a state-wide crackdown on waterfront slums. But Lagos state itself has denied it gave such orders. A significant number of people who live in Lagos are poor and are accommodated in slums. Their lives are precarious.
